PhD Mid Seminar - Hate and threats against journalists: Consequences for freedom of speech and democracy

PhD candidates at the Sociology of Law Department hold three seminars during the period of education: a start-up seminar, a mid seminar, and a final seminar. Participation in seminars is an essential part of the PhD education to fully reach the learning outcomes. The seminars are always in English.

The research aims to analyze opinion formation in a digital age, focusing on the growing exposure to online hate among journalists and to what extent this development generates self-censorship and, ultimately, endangers central democratic values.

The thesis is a part of the research project: ”Hot och hat mot journalister: konsekvenser avseende yttrandefrihet och demokrati” financed by The Swedish Crime Victim Compensation and Support Authority.
