SUMMARY:Beyond Despair: Foreign Language Education\, Environmental Humaniti
es\, and a Pedagogy of Resilience
DESCRIPTION:Kontakt: monika.class@englund.lu.se\n\nIn the talk\, Uwe Küchl
er (Professor at University of Tübingen) challenges the prevailing approa
ch in German teaching materials that fixates on environmental catastrophe\
, urgency\, and individual behavioral changes. These materials inadvertent
ly channel students' perspectives towards despair. Instead\, his talk expl
ores the environmental humanities and an interdisciplinary approach as a f
oundation for reimagining foreign language education. The presentation dra
ws on related disciplines—ecolinguistics\, ecocriticism\, critical pedag
ogy\, and environmental psychology. The goal is to illuminate how students
can become active agents in transforming environmental communication. Thi
s means creating opportunities for meaningful engagement and a more hopefu
l understanding of ecological challenges. Drawing on his recent book Envir
onmental Literacy and the Teaching of English&nbsp\;(Narr 2025)\, Uwe Küc
hler argues for foreign language learning to move beyond despairing narrat
ives and become a critical space for environmental awareness.\n\nMer infor
